20/10/2024
It’s almost Diwali Time, and we are already feeling festive, ain’t we? We take this moment to answer some of the frequently asked questions around the Festival of Lights.
Q. What are the other names of Diwali? What does Diwali mean?
Ans.** Diwali (or Deepavali/ Deepawali)** comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which means rows of lights.
Q. When is Diwali in 2024?
Ans: In 2024, Diwali is falling across 2 dates - 31st October 2024 (Thursday) and 1st November 2024 (Friday).
Q. Why is Diwali celebrated?
Ans: In Hindu tradition, one of the most well-known reasons for celebrating Diwali is the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman to the kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. During his exile, Lord Rama defeated the demon king Ravana, symbolising the victory of good over evil. The people of Ayodhya celebrated his return by lighting oil lamps (diyas) and illuminating the entire kingdom to welcome him home. This is why diyas are lit during Diwali to symbolise light and happiness.
Diwali is also a time to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and fortune. On Diwali night, people perform Lakshmi Puja to seek her blessings for wealth and prosperity in the coming year.
Q. How to celebrate Diwali? How should we decorate our house? What are some of the Diwali activities that are done on or before Diwali?
The first step in celebrating Diwali is to clean the house and declutter. The cleaning of the house is to prepare for the arrival of Goddess Laxmi in the house.
Apart from cleaning, the house is also decorated with Rangoli.Lights.Flowers! People also hang Kandils (lanterns) and place Torans (door hangings) at the entrance of the house. It’s good to wear new and ethnic clothes during the day to keep the festive vibes up.
The festival of lights is incomplete with the lights. The whole house is decorated with oil diyas around the house as well as LED lights to make the house filled with lights.
Rangoli is generally designed and made at the entrance of the house, and is made with colours, flower petals or even coloured rice. This is an activity where kids can also help the elders and make beautiful decorations.
The kids also indulge in activities like diya painting, rangoli making, making greeting cards for family and friends, and giving it to them, making colouring diwali posters as well as reading stories about Diwali.
In the evenings and as per muhuratam, Laxmi puja is performed in front of idols and pictures of Goddess Laxmi, and flowers, sweets and fruits are offered to Laxmi Maa. Prayers and aartis are performed, followed by sweets distribution to the family. Sweets are also exchanged with friends and neighbours.
The sweets distribution is typically followed by setting off the firecrackers. The dinner is generally full of lavish spreads including tasty food like poori, chhole and sweets.
