During his exile, Lord Rama defeated the demon king Ravana, symbolising the victory of good over evil. The first step in celebrating Diwali is to clean the house and declutter. The cleaning of the house is to prepare for the arrival of Goddess Laxmi in the house. 

 

Apart from cleaning, the house is also decorated with Rangoli.Lights.Flowers! People also hang Kandils (lanterns) and place Torans (door hangings) at the entrance of the house. It’s good to wear new and ethnic clothes during the day to keep the festive vibes up.
